Rescale energy meter readings

For the SmartgridOne Controller energy meters are pre-configured with the most common scaling factors. However, if you have a different scaling factor, you can rescale the energy meter readings.

For stable functioning of the control system, it is important that the SmartgridOne Controller knows the correct scaling factor of each energy meter.

What are scaling factors?​

Scaling factors are used to convert the raw data from the energy meter into meaningful values. For example, if an energy meter reports a value of 1000, and the scaling factor is set to 10, the actual value would be 100 watts (1000 / 10 = 100). Manufacturers often provide energy meters with a default scaling factor, but this may not always match the actual setup or requirements of your system. In other cases, the scaling factor is configured by the installer or user during the commissioning of the system and need to be adjusted in the SmartgridOne Controller.

How to recognize wrong scaling?​

We showcase a typical example of a scaling issue:

The installation below, is an installation in which we know * by speaking with the customer * that there is very little consumption. This is not reflected on what we see in the app:

What we see instead, is that the consumption is 118 kW, which is not possible. The first step is to check the raw data in the SmartgridOne Controller. This can be done by going to the commissioning interface, and then to the Data tab. We immediately notice the following on our grid meter:

  • Marked in green: The current value (across all phases) is 149 + 146 + 147 = ~442 A
  • Marked in green: The average voltage value (across all phases) is around ~246 V
  • Marked in orange: The power value (across all phases) is ~2800 W, which is not possible with such a high current and voltage. Instead, it should have been 2800 000 W, which is 2800 kW! That's a scaling factor of 1000.

How to rescale the energy meter readings?​

To rescale the energy meter readings, follow these steps:

  1. Open the commissioning interface.
  2. Go to the Devices tab.
  3. Click on the Settings button of the energy meter you want to rescale.

  1. In the settings, find the appropriate Scaling factor field.
  2. Adjust the scaling factor to the correct value. In our example, we would set the power scaling factor to 1000.
